in 1998, one of the prime marina locations in the
Wildwood, N.J., area was just a piece of land with
decaying storage trailers, as well as pilings and docks
in various stages of rot and in extensive need of repair
and rehabilitation.

The McKee Group, a family-owned business with several
housing developments and other ventures, with
headquarters in Springfield, Delaware County, PA,
decided they would like to be in the marina business.
With the former Wildwood Yacht Basin in desperate
financial straits, Frank McKee, Sr. and Frank Jr.
stepped up to the plate and purchased what is now known
as Schooner Island Marina.
Both McKees were familiar with the boating scene,
each owning, at the time, Hatteras Yachts.

The McKee Group knew it would be a huge task to make
this diamond in the rough into the jewel it could be.
Working out of an office trailer, the rebuilding
started by widening and strengthening the bridge that
connects the "Island" to the City of Wildwood.
Old fuel tanks had to be removed, as well as some
of the adjacent soil, before new 12,000 fiberglass-clad
steel tanks could be installed.
Contractors were signed up to construct new docks
for the more than 300 associated slips, as well as
fixtures for water, electric, telephone and TV cable.
One of the main docks also had to be configured
to provide for a fueling station and pump out
connections.
The weekend before Memorial Day, 1999, was set for the
grand opening of Schooner Island Marina, with about 40%
of the slips ready to go.
On May 20, 2000, the Marina celebrated the
opening of its newly-constructed Ship's Store, Dock master's
Building and in-ground swimming pool. All 300 slips came on line, as well as a full service
department. The
service facility includes in its equipment complement a
55-ton Marine Travelift, 10-ton forklift and a Hostar
trailer. They
are an authorized service facility for Mercruiser, Honda
and Jasper Engines.

The McKee Group set its sights on making the complex
complete by forming a subsidiary known as McKee Yacht
Sales in 2000. Besides
having many brokerage boats on the property, they became
dealers for SeaCraft, Regal, the Jersey Cape 36, and
have just joined forces with Rampage Sport Fishing
Yachts as an authorized dealer.
A new 10,000-sq. ft.
building and boat showroom is scheduled to be built
soon, enabling McKee Yacht Sales and their customers to
take advantage of being located in one of the New
Jersey's Urban Enterprise Zones, thereby passing along
tax incentives to prospective buyers.
The Marina is known
for its many family-oriented activities throughout the
summer, including the Cape May County Offshore Classic,
the annual talent show featuring the marina slip holders
and their kids, as well as a full weekend of events
planned for the observance of the nationwide National
Marina Day. The
big highlight of the summer season is what is known
locally as Christmas in July.
It features a parade of decorated boats and a
barbecue for slip holders and their guests.

Schooner Island Marina has become a destination for many
of the Chesapeake Bay yachts clubs, as well as groups
from the North Jersey and the New York metropolitan
area. With
the user-friendly Cape May Inlet, and easy access to the
Delaware Bay through the Cape May Canal, the free
beaches of the Wildwoods, and the world-class boardwalk
with its amusements have all proven to be a tremendous
draw for the Marina.
Local restaurants and stores are all within
walking distance for the visitors.
For those hearty souls who may feel lucky, it's
only 45 minutes to the casinos in Atlantic City, and
anyone who enjoys the Victorian theme and horse-drawn
carriages, Cape May is only five miles to the south.
The Marina hosts the local Power Squadron to provide
boating courses, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary in
conducting courtesy boat inspections.
Local emergency service responders are also
encouraged to conduct familiarization drills on the site
as well.
With the success of
the Marina, adjacent property values have doubled,
surrounding vacant land is seeing condominiums being
built, and the adjacent business establishments banding
together and naming the entrance to Wildwood as
"Schooner Landing."
Schooner Island Marina, in
only five short years, has enjoyed tremendous growth and
has been named by a monthly periodical as "one of the
top ten destination marinas on the east coast."
